Bye-bye, Goch!

Ende Mai wird sich unser englischer Sprachassistent Christopher vom GoGy verabschieden. Über seine Zeit in Deutschland schreibt er im folgenden Bericht:

In August 2015 I started my nine month placement here in Goch and in this time I have learnt so much about Germany, the Niederrhein and German culture. My role in the school was as a Fremdsprachenassistent; this meant my job involved aiding the school’s English teachers with their lessons, carrying out my own with their guidance and engaging with the students to make English as fun and as interesting to learn as possible.
I was hugely impressed by the ability of the students here at the Gymnasium and at the extraordinary effort the staff put into the nurturing of this ability. Back home in England, languages are unfortunately neglected as a subject, predominately because English is the lingua franca of the world, so I didn’t know what to expect in Germany. I was astonished on my first day, when I realised that the students in my Year 7 English class could speak better English than my Year 13 German class could speak German.
Living with a wonderful host family in Pfalzdorf, the children of whom went to Goch Gymnasium when they were younger, I’ve been able to experience a typical German lifestyle. Highlights include, watching an excellent St. Martin’s Day parade, witnessing the wonders of Karneval in Cologne and Dusseldorf, learning all about the Landwirtschaft in Pfalzdorf through my host family’s hobbies and eating lots and lots of the surprisingly delicious German food (Reibekuchen are by far my favourite and I think I’ll be cooking them every week in England next year).
Goch Gymnasium really has been such a wonderful place to work at and looking back and reflecting now, I am able to see how much many of the students have improved in such a short amount of time. It’s impossible to select specific memories, because there are so many, but I was so overwhelmed by the theatrical performance of one of my Year 6 classes at the open day this year, my mind is regularly blown by the quality of the videos my Q1 Literatur class produce and just in general I am able to cycle home every day being impressed by the understanding of grammar, size of vocabulary and confidence my classes have.
As my last point I would like to thank the amazing staff at the school, especially the English department and Herr Dr. Peters, all of whom have made me feel extremely welcome at the school and provided me with multiple opportunities to really become part of the family here and to give me an insight in to the wonders Germany has to offer. When I found out I would be working in a town called Goch, I admit, I hadn’t heard of it before, nevertheless I am so glad that this is the school I was able to work at. My time in Germany really could not have been better.

Christopher Schultüte

Before my first day, I received a traditional Schultüte from my host family.
